The final disc in a series cataloguing the work of Leó Weiner, a highly respected Hungarian educator and composer, was released in 2010. The CD includes a recording by the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra – led by László Kovács for almost 30 years – of Weiner's 1955 orchestral arrangement of Ferenc Liszt's Sonata in B minor. The Year of Liszt represents the perfect opportunity to perform this outstanding and, for the orchestra, extremely challenging arrangement in a concert setting. The score, rich in... innovation and colour, currently exists only in manuscript form. By way of introduction, the audience will hear Mozart's first Violin Concerto, which he is believed to have composed while still in his teens in 1773. The piece is to be performed by an even younger musician in Máté Soós, born in Marosvásárhely (Târgu Mureş) in 1996. The talented youngster, who learned his music in Miskolc, has already placed highly in a number of competitions and is a student of Eszter Perényi at the Budapest Academy of Music's preparatory faculty. The second of the three pieces of music to be heard is the work of bassoonist and composer Zoltán Kovács, commissioned by the Debrecen Philharmonic Orchestra in 2007. Born in 1969, the bassoonist to the Hungarian State Opera has written a number of orchestral works and oratorios for respected Hungarian symphony orchestras. In 2008, the Double Concerto to be played tonight earned Kovács the Benedek Istvánffy prize, which is awarded to composers aged 40 or under by the Hungarian Composers' Union.
