Since January 2012, contemporary Hungarian literature has found a home in the Palace of Arts under the aegis of the Literarium series, which in its first season has already garnered a strong reputation as a prestigious forum for today’s outstanding writers. These popular evenings, which have repeatedly packed in full houses so far, continue for their second season by presenting a series of authors well known to the public at large in the now customary but unusual format, with numerous surprises ...in store. Instead of the regular musical collaborators of the first season, from now on a different guest musician “tailor-made” to each featured literary figure will ensure the high standard of the given evening’s proceedings. September’s guest Sándor Kányádi hardly needs an introduction in the traditional sense as he is one of the favourite poets of the native Hungarian reading public whose art transcends cliques or literary schools, spanning generations, age groups and national boundaries. Kányádi is a captivating personality who has lived through important times, a living legend simultaneously free of any affectation, and a magical storyteller with a treasure of lively anecdotes. Whoever has heard Uncle Sándor recite verse or simply tell stories will truly not forget the experience quickly once the writer has warmed to his theme. The writer’s close friend from Transylvania, the well-known composer and conductor György Selmeczi, will undoubtedly play no small part in ensuring that the occasion remains long in the audience’s memory.
