Of the items one might list on a resumé, the Makarenko Kindergarten would create a very bad impression. The Attila József Award might sound a little better, but the Kalocsa Revolutionary Regiment and the 82nd Mine-laying Company would come across badly. The Márai Award is a plus, but the Ho Chi Minh Teacher Training College is not so positive. A Berlin DAAD scholarship, however, is something you certainly would not leave off. Today’s guest at the Literarium, a series that sets today’s most excit...ing Hungarian writers in an entirely new light, is László Garaczi. At the outset of his career, all the signs were there that he would become the new enfant terrible of Hungarian literature. There was no lack of ability or intention, but he was inevitably overtaken by rivals who put all their eggs in one basket. By way of revenge, this author kept his freedom and youth, resisting the sobering ravages of time while slowly evolving into an inspirational role model and point of reference for an entire generation of Hungarians. Through a collection of works of fundamental importance, he has become recognised as a master, even though his characters, books, films and plays bear no resemblance to our usual understanding of this characterisation. The cast for tonight’s performance has its work cut out: Alinda Veiszer, the hostess with the questions, Bea Palya, who offers much more than background music, and director Eszter Novák. The audience can also be certain that the guests brought in by a writer as unique as Garaczi will be anything but run-of-the-mill. The tone for this rich and highly entertaining literary evening will be set by readings from the author’s favourite pieces of writing, but everything from then on will deviate from its expected course...
