Since January 2012, contemporary Hungarian literature has found a home in the Palace of Arts under the aegis of the Literarium series, which in its first season has already garnered a strong reputation as a prestigious forum for today’s outstanding writers. These popular evenings, which have repeatedly packed in full houses so far, continue for their second season by presenting a series of authors well known to the public at large in the now customary but unusual format, with numerous surprises ...in store. Instead of the regular musical collaborators of the first season, from now on a different guest musician “tailor-made” to each featured literary figure will ensure the high standard of the evening’s proceedings. Our childhood would have been a sadder place without István Csukás. Even in the exceptionally rich field of Hungarian children’s literature, Csukás achieves what few others can, immersing himself in a child’s world, seeing with their eyes, truly becoming a child himself once again, and thus experiencing from the inside the joys and adventures that fairytales can offer. The heroes of his children’s fantasy world, such as Süsü, Mirr-Murr and Pom-Pom, remain indelible and everlasting for readers of several generations. Csukás does what only the best writers can do: he simultaneously educates and entertains. He invests the imaginary characters in his tales with human traits. The figures he creates are just as fallible, sensitive and vulnerable as we are ourselves. And yet they are naturally all the more appealing for this – heroes children can really root for in their hearts – confirming that without István Csukás the world itself would be a sadder place. Unusually, the Literarium stage does not aim to address an audience of children on this occasion, but adult readers who have preserved their childlike natures. In the company of the musical virtuoso and the author’s close friend Ferenc Darvas, a frenetic evening’s entertainment beckons. Secrets of the writer’s art will be brought to the audience by an immensely charming and genial author of a hundred volumes, once again bringing joy to his reading public.
