The story of contemporary Hungarian lyric poetry cannot be written without including the verse of Kolozsvár (Cluj) poet Géza Szőcs, as it is impossible to understand what it is like to live in a minority under dictatorship without exploring the risky nature of Szőcs’s brave actions and consequent persecution. In his unique poetic world, the continual blurring of the lines between the real and the imagined creates a medium in which the close-guarded freedom of childhood fantasy is constantly inva...ded by dramatic suspicion and threatening suggestion. Since A szélnek eresztett bábu (1986) and A sirálybőr cipő (1989), Szőcs – who is regarded as one of the most important poets in the Hungarian literary diaspora – has created a fictitious poetic world of imaginary landscapes and stories drawn from the autobiographical facts of his own experience under tyranny and the indignities of existence as a minority, all woven with playful, fairytale motifs over which despotism holds no sway. Besides his powerful, unmistakeable poetic output, Szőcs has lately produced numerous ground-breaking, sometimes enigmatic volumes that are hard to define by genre. The time has come, therefore, to shed some light on the hitherto hidden tricks of the trade that have generated this important body of work, with the help of György Selmeczi, the poet’s childhood friend who has set many of his verses to music. Their intense, profound personal and artistic relationship is the guarantee for an exciting evening abundant in surprises. Our visitors are kindly informed that this performance will be presented in Hungarian. Presented by: Palace of Arts
