Culture vultures can look forward to an exceptional and rare opportunity in the shape of an evening on stage with a softly spoken master of contemporary Hungarian literature who only very seldom appears in public. In both his speech and writing, Ádám Bodor is entirely free of all ornamentation, embellishment, pomposity or equivocation, yet he conceals an endlessly colourful and authentic personality beneath his reserved exterior. In his books – the legendary Sinistra körzet (Sinistra District), ...Az érsek látogatása (The Archbishop’s Visit), Verhovina madarai (The Birds of Verhovina) and others – he restricts himself to the most concise exposition possible, as if sketching only an outline. However, it is through this restrained and puritanical mode of expression that he builds one of the richest writer’s worlds in literature today, a body of work of classical and lasting value whose influence can scarcely be escaped by those who immerse themselves in any of his novels or short stories. This evening shared with the outstanding jazz guitarist Attila László should not be missed by anyone attracted by a meeting of great minds.
