Music historian Róbert Mandel's series of fascinating insights into the instruments of the past continues into 2011 at the Palace of Arts. These performances are put on for anyone young or old with an interest in instruments of the past. The third programme of the series looks at musical curiosities of the Baroque era. Not many examples of these instruments remain today, and those people able to play them are also few and far between – but Róbert Mandel has gathered an excellent selection of bot...h. The concertos to be heard here were not written for the violin or harpsichord, but for Baroque zither, bagpipes, vielle, and lute-harpsichord. For instance, the audience will hear works from Michel Corrette, who lived through almost the entire 18th century until his death at the age of 87. The rhythms of his influential works, some of which Róbert Mandel has recorded with his Ensemble Le Berger Fortuné, reveal much about how these instruments were originally played. Among the members of the ensemble are Jean-Christophe Maillard, an internationally acclaimed musette player, and Pál Németh's Savaria Baroque Orchestra, superb exponents of classical Baroque music. The concert will also feature Margit Kovács, an accomplished player of the lautenwerk (an intriguing hybrid of lute and harpsichord), and world-famous tromba marina player Thilo Hirsch from Germany. The latter instrument is a giant, single-stringed construction in the style of a violin. Sometimes known as the nun's violin, legend has it the instrument was played in cloisters in lieu of trumpets. If this brief introduction has piqued your interest, do not miss this unique opportunity to learn much more about Baroque instruments.
