The Székesfehérvár Alba Regia Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1913, once again brings a rich musical programme to the Palace of Arts. Thanks to the work of excellent flautist, Béla Drahos, who as worked as a conductor for two decades and headed the orchestra since 1999, its performances are now extremely highly regarded. The soloist for the Liszt Piano Concerto will be László Borbély, an outstanding young pianist who has already won second place in the 2006 international Liszt–Bartók Piano Compet...ition. He will be followed by a composition by a contemporary Hungarian composer whose music is both accessible and enjoyable. János Vajda's impeccably crafted seven-movement Magnificat is the most important piece in his oeuvre and it is no coincidence that the work is popular among orchestras and choral ensembles alike. This performance features the Veszprém Mixed Choir led by Ágnes Erdélyi, which frequently performs alongside the Székesfehérvár Symphony Orchestra. The audience will also hear one of the classics of symphonic music in Tchaikovsky's final symphony – the name "Pathétique" betrays its its extremely sombre tone. Written in November 1893 and premièred just days before the composer's death, it is one of the most enigmatic pieces of music ever written. Theories abound about Tchaikovsky's mysterious death, yet suicide remains the most probable cause. As such, the composition, the finale of which is a painfully slow movement, can be taken as a farewell letter of sorts. Presented by: The Alba Regia Symphony Orchestra and the Palace of Arts
