Conductor: János Bali Pál Benkő, Zoltán Gavodi, Csaba Gyulai, Zoltán Kalmanovits, Ádám Kard, András Koncz, Zoltán Mizsei, Péter Patay, Richárd Sólyom, Ferenc Tőkés Bodor – singers Johannes Ockeghem: Alma redemptoris mater Missa “Ma maitresse” Missa “De plus en plus” Johannes Ockeghem (ca. 1410–1497) was one of the most respected Flemish masters of the Renaissance. His artistry is profound, uniquely sensitive and has an irrational effect and set the standards for the generation of composers... who followed him. The motet Alma redemptoris mater is an adaptation of the four voice Maria Gregorian antiphon of the same name. The mass Ma maitresse – from which only the Kyrie and Gloria have survived – is based on Ockeghem’s own chanson, while the grand scale mass De plus en plus is constructed upon the tenor solo of songs by the contemporary Gilles Binchois. The A:N:S Chorus was formed in 1993 to primarily perform major Renaissance polyphonic works, masses and motets. The size and composition of this all male choir varies according to the work in hand and acoustic requirements. The choir’s six CDs made for Hungaroton Classics have been widely praised by international critics. The first album was mentioned in London Gramophone magazine’s Critics’ Choice column in 1999; the next two were “Records of the Year” on the largest early music internet hit list at medieval.org of California; their most recent CD was judged by the German klassik.com to be the most valuable recording of recent years in the field of Franco-Flemish polyphony. János Bali, who founded and leads the choir, is not only a conductor but also works as a composer, flautist and teacher. The two principal areas of his activities are Renaissance and contemporary music. As a flautist and Baroque flute player he regularly gives solo recitals and as a member of various chamber music ensembles and period instrument groups, gives concerts in Hungary, numerous European countries and the United States.
