Using his exceptional gifts not as circus tricks but in order to keep the works of the great composers alive, Gergely Bogányi serves the spiritual and intellectual legacy of the giants of music history with an impressive professional and artistic humility. Responding in an interview to the suggestion that an image of Franz Liszt’s music exists in the public consciousness in the way that water sparkles on its surface, Bogányi says: “There is no need to defend him as Liszt’s music defends itself, ...and will outlive all childish and cheap attacks. From an early age, Liszt possessed an extraordinarily strong yearning for God. There is no deeper or more sincere devotion, even in Mozart or Chopin. His music is steeped in it, including the Hungarian rhapsodies. Liszt’s virtuosity is often completely misunderstood.” This response explains why Bogányi chose a programme of works by Liszt and Bach in 2012 as the follow-up to his Chopin marathon in 2010 and his solo evening of Liszt’s works in 2011. Although the connection between Liszt and Bach is well known, their works are only rarely coupled together in concert. In the third and final recital of Bogányi’s one-man marathon, he will play the Romantic master’s large-scale series of variations on a Bach theme, as well as his own transcription of the sole organ work by Bach which was published during its composer’s lifetime, the awe-inspiring Prelude and Fugue in E-flat major. The first and third recitals in the series on 22 October include all but two works from the Italian chapter of Liszt’s Years of Pilgrimage; moreover. The closing evening recital will also include two exquisite compositions from his years spent in religious meditation in Rome, as well as masterpieces inspired by a painting of Raphael and Dante’s Divine Comedy. Day tickets are available for the 3.30pm, 6pm and 8 pm performances of “A Day with Gergely Bogányi - Liszt and Bach” for prices of 5100, 6300, 7800 and 9900 Forints. Day tickes
