Susana Baca – vocals, David Pinto – double bass, bass guitar, Hugo Bravo – percussion, Juan Medrano “Cotito” – cajón The music of Peru is not just restricted to Indian musicians wearing ponchos, playing pan pipes, recorders, drums, guitars and bells. There exists another African rooted tradition deriving from the slaves with whom the Spanish and Portuguese populated the plantations. Until the 1990s, this style of Afro-Peruvian music was virtually unknown. Its most important representative is S...usana Baca. In her family, it was normal after Sunday lunch to sing the old “black songs”, and she could not understand why at school, she only learned about Spanish and Inca culture. This is why she and her husband later founded an institute to research Afro-Peruvian tradition. And because she herself sang so beautifully, she caught the attention of the great David Byrne, always on the lookout for Latin American musical treasures. She charmed him so much that he published her first solo record (Susana Baca) in 1997 and after this there has been no stopping her. Her album of 2000, Eco de Sombras was followed two years later by Espiritu Vivo, and in 2006, Travesías was released. Baca’s contemporary Afro-Peruvian music recalls fado or morna music: a kind of smoky, feverish bar music designed to break the heart. Not much more is needed than one or two guitars and a wooden box known as a “cajón” which is best known from Flamenco. Then the listener senses their throats constricting, that they are speechless and their hairs on their napes are bristling. It feels good! Susana Baca is a moving experience not to be missed.
