At that time the band, which blended music from the greatest diversity of cultures, was a representative of Central-European ethno-avant-garde music. The 25 years that have elapsed since then brought a series of international performances and the release of 14 albums. By the turn of the millennium Makám, which was formed in 1984 by Zoltán Krulik, had melded the influences of Asian, far-eastern, Balkan, African and contemporary repetitive music into a unique sound. To achieve this, besides the traditional European instruments (oboe, guitar, double bass), he “deployed” exotic folk instruments originating from – for example – the Balkans (gadulka, kaval), India (sarangi, tabla, gatham) and Africa (sansa, marimba). The mix also included jazz and avant-garde music; and the band was soon joined by a number of superb vocalists. The songs of many different cultures were played, from Hungarian folk music to southern Slavic tunes, and several female singers, who have since forged successful solo careers, fronted the band as soloists at one time or another. These include Irén Lovász, Bea Palya and Ági Szalóki, to name but a few. A quarter of a century down the road Makám is still a renowned representative of the Hungarian brand of world music, and even today the heritage of Bartók and Kodály, the synthesis of the musical aspects of archaic and contemporary cultures, remain at the heart of the band’s philosophy.
