Kálmán Balogh – cimbalom, Ferenc Kovács – violin, trumpet, Péter Bede – tenor saxophone, Frankie Látó – violin, Mihály György – guitar, Csaba Novák – double bass Featuring: Ági Szalóki – vocals, Gusztáv Balogh – vocals, Gábor Pusztai – percussion Kálmán Balogh’s cimbalom band, founded fifteen years ago, has a unique and extraordinary world. This includes numerous European countries in which Gypsies play folk music, jazz or any kind of music for entertainment; it also includes instrumental and... vocal music and although arrangements are constructed around Kálmán Balogh’s cimbalom, no less illumination is shone upon the bass, violin, guitar or trumpet. What’s more, this cimbalom band takes great care not to repeat itself too much. While they first made waves with the albums Roma Wanderer and Aroma as they grew in confidence, their next album, Gipsy Colours forged instrumental and vocal gypsy music into a unity. Their work with David Murray, David Murray and the Kálmán Balogh Gipsy Cimbalom Band featuring Ferenc Kovács extended a bridge between East European Gypsy music and free jazz. Last year’s album Aven Shavale showed the strengthening influence of Northern Rumanian and Balkan brass music. In these records and concerts by Kálmán Balogh and his band, the common denominators are virtuosity, buoyancy and joy. “Music of joy” put simply. And on Kálmán Balogh’s 2005 album Christmas music for Joy containing Hungarian and Gypsy Christmas songs, there is also a considerable amount of devotion. So that gives us some idea what to expect in this concert which draws on the music from Christmas Music for Joy and Aven Shavale.
