The accordion is an instrument we can easily imagine being played in an ensemble to a large gathering, be it a happy or sad occasion, sometimes driving the melody along but perhaps not primarily as a solo instrument. Given that it’s rare to even see two accordions together, the sound of four or even five of the instruments taking the stage for an entire evening’s concert is a rare one indeed. And yet this is exactly what’s in store at the Palace of Arts on 27 May, as Portugal’s Danças Ocultas ...give a joint concert with Zoltán Orosz. The members of the Portuguese quartet (Artur Fernandes, Filipe Cal, Filipe Ricardo and Francisco Miguel) all started by playing in folk music groups before taking up classical studies, finally finishing up with the accordion. They formed the group in 1989, initially to play traditional melodies, but later began writing their own compositions with the aim of elevating the instrument to the rank that it deserves. They continue to work in the same spirit to this day – and so successfully that no one hearing them in concert would think for a moment that any other instrument is needed. Many influences can be recognized in their style, such as the sounds of the Arabic world that characterize their latest album Tarab. The quartet often collaborates with guest artists, and for their Budapest concert they will share the stage with Hungary’s Zoltán Orosz, a lover of the accordion since his teenage years whose music comfortably embraces everything from transcriptions of classical works to ragtime, to French, Spanish, Russian and German melodies.
