Rob Paparozzi – vocals, Dave Gellis – guitar, Glenn McClelland – keyboard instruments, Gary Foote – bass guitar, Andrea Valentini – drums, Steve Jankowski – trumpet, Teddy Mulet – trumpet, Jens Wendelboe – trombone Blood, Sweat & Tears are more than a classic line-up, they are one of the unavoidable legends of rock history. Funnily enough though, the founding keyboard player Al Kooper intended the band to be no more than a stepping stone. He thought he’d bring together a few jazz and rock m...usicians who in a couple of concerts would earn enough so he could move from New York to London. After their first album, he left Blood, Sweat & Tears but most of his fellow band leaders remained and after bringing in vocalist David Clayton Thomas, and trumpet player and brass section leader Lew Soloff, they made a new record. This CD was called simply Blood, Sweat & Tears and led the US hit parade for seven weeks; it contained such evergreen classics as Spinning Wheel, You’ve Made Me So Very Happy and When I Die; it sold two million copies in a year and won the Grammy Award as “Record of the Year”. The mood that produced a hitherto unknown fusion of rhythm & blues, soul, jazz and psychedelic rock also characterised their 1970s album Blood, Sweat & Tears 3 and this led to another immortal hit (Hi-De-Ho) to add to their own personal hall of fame. Despite their amazing success, the make-up of the band continually changed and for a while, Clayton-Thomas also left to try and launch a solo career. We can state quite simply that in 2008, the band has managed to achieve its fortieth anniversary of unbroken success. The members continue to come and go, but their concerts still feature the hits from the first three Blood, Sweat & Tears albums, revamped and placed in new arrangements, avoiding the trap of simple nostalgia.
