There was once on Hungarian television a children’s programme called Buddy (“Cimbora”). Of the buddies, many were musicians and a good few became professionals over the years. And there was a famous pianist-conductor who worked a great deal with the music making buddies. They now meet again and make music together. The eternally youthful conductor Tamás Vásáry, and the now famous buddies, tenor Szabolcs Brickner and virtuoso violinist and orchestra concertmaster Vilmos Oláh. The Buddies program...me returned to the screens a few years ago on Duna Television, led by founder editor Márta É. Szabó. So there are buddies and musicians now as well. One notable buddy is Ildikó Szabó, who by the time she was fifteen had won so many competitions, prizes and critical acclaim that it would turn most adult musicians green with envy. In this programme she represents the latest generation of buddies. The theme of the Palace of Art’s re-launched youth series this half year is musical humour, the understanding of which requires attention and openness as well as preparation and knowledge. The programmes of the four concerts this half-year explore this theme and show different aspects of humour: musical gags based on the unexpected, parodies and more refined examples of musical wit. Tamás Vásáry, who has demonstrated time and again his ability to entrance an audience with not just music but words, will endeavour to show his young audience what pleasures there are to be found when understanding musical humour.
