Replay of the live broadcast with English and Hungarian subtitle. The productions of the New York Metropolitan Opera can now be seen and heard at some 1,900 theatres in 64 countries worldwide. The 2013/14 season kicks off without delay with a new production of Tchaikovsky’s romantic conceived by British director Deborah Warner. The Sunday Telegraph praised Warner’s direction for its “mixture of haunting visual and emotional impact”, adding that she shows with great sensibility how the work is... “about two colliding Russian societies – rustic provincialism and cosmopolitan decadence”. The performance will be conducted by Valery Gergiev, one of the leading interpreters of the Russian repertoire. Anna Netrebko, another star of global renown and an equally fluent speaker of this musical language, is embarking on her third consecutive season at the Met, but this will be the first time she sings the role of Tatiana at the company. In the title role is Polish baritone Mariusz Kwiecień, who first conquered hearts – and the entire opera world – as Don Giovanni, and who made his debut as Onegin at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, going on to tour with the prestigious company to noisy public plaudits throughout Europe. Piotr Beczała reprises his acclaimed performance as Lenski, Onegin’s friend who becomes his rival in the duel, while the role of Olga is sung by Oksana Volkova, who has boosted the ranks at the Bolshoi and made her Metropolitan debut last year as Maddalena in Rigoletto, closely followed by the title role in Carmen. In the role of Gremin is Alexei Tanovitski, a regular performer at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg who already has around a half-century of performances to his name in mostly Russian operas.
