The Palace of Arts now organises the “Wagner in Budapest” Opera Festival for the fourth time. 2009 presents a summary of the previous years and in two and a half weeks; the musicians will again perform all the operas staged so far. Repeating the events of 2008, Der Ring des Niebelungen – probably uniquely in the world – will be performed on four consecutive days, in fact on two occasions as well as Parisfal. The resident orchestra remains the MR Symphonics and Ádám Fischer will conduct each per...formance. He made his debut conducting the Ring at the Bayreuth Festival in 2001. He conducted probably the greatest operatic cycle in music for the next three years on the Green Hill where he returned to conduct Parsifal in 2006 and 2007. In 2007 he received the highly prestigious Eichala chalice which the city of Bayreuth donates to artists who have enjoyed extended periods of success at the Festival. Hartmut Schörghofer was born in Salzburg and studied interior design in Linz before learning set design at the Mozarteum in his native city. He made his international reputation as a set designer primarily at opera houses. These days, he is primarily occupied with opera direction, and his joint role as a set designer allows him to approach operas from an unusual and fruitful angle. Eric F. Halfvarson has for the last twenty years been one of the most respected interpreters of Hagen in the world, bringing a truly commanding vocal prowess to the role. He sang it at Bayreuth between 1994 and 1998 but also performed it in the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the New York Metropolitan, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Vienna Staatsoper. At the “Wagner in Budapest” Opera Festival 2009, he will also be performing Gurnemanz in Parsifal. Erika Markovics has been a soloist at the Hungarian State Opera since 1988. Her repertoire includes many Mozart pieces as well as works by Italian composers but she also appears in Janáček’s opera Jenůfa. Her Wagner roles include besides Gutrune the Shepherd Boy in Tannhäuser as well as Freia and Sieglinde in Der Ring des Niebelungen. Cornelia Kallisch enjoyed much success at the 2008 “Wagner in Budapest” Opera Festival as Erda and Waltraute. As a member of the Zurich Opera she made her reputation singing Mozart and Richard Strauss roles (Dorabella, Annio, as well as Octavian and the Composer) before presenting a succession of dramatic heroines from Wagner: Brangäne, Kundry, Fricka and Waltraute. One of her favourite roles is Judit from Prince Bluebeard’s Castle, which she has sung from Zurich to New York and has even recorded it with conductor Péter Eötvös.
