The Palace of Arts now organises the “Wagner in Budapest” Opera Festival for the fourth time. 2009 presents a summary of the previous years and in two and a half weeks; the musicians will again perform all the operas staged so far. Repeating the events of 2008, Der Ring des Niebelungen – probably uniquely in the world – will be performed on four consecutive days, in fact on two occasions as well as Parisfal. The resident orchestra remains the MR Symphonics and Ádám Fischer will conduct each per...formance. He made his debut conducting the Ring at the Bayreuth Festival in 2001. He conducted probably the greatest operatic cycle in music for the next three years on the Green Hill where he returned to conduct Parsifal in 2006 and 2007. In 2007 he received the highly prestigious Eichala chalice which the city of Bayreuth donates to artists who have enjoyed extended periods of success at the Festival. Hartmut Schörghofer was born in Salzburg and studied interior design in Linz before learning set design at the Mozarteum in his native city. He made his international reputation as a set designer primarily at opera houses. These days, he is primarily occupied with opera direction, and his joint role as a set designer allows him to approach operas from an unusual and fruitful angle. Christian Franz played the title role of Parsifal in 2006 and returns to sing his fourth tenor role from The Ring reprising his roles as Loge and Siegmund. After his operatic debut he was very soon noted as a tremendous Wagnerian. Giuseppe Sinopoli invited him to a concert hall performance of Walküre in Dresden and London, while Daniel Barenboim asked him to play several roles in Berlin. He performed for years also at Bayreuth in Siegfried and Götterdämmerung. Walter Fink’s career is closely linked to the Vienna Staatsoper. He made his debut in 1977 and after his years in Bremen, became a soloist there in 1991. Since then he has sung more than seventy roles in close to seven hundred performances. At the Wagner Festival 2009, he will sing also Fafner from Rheingold and Siegfried. Christiane Iven is a soloist at the Stuttgart Staatsoper where this season’s roles will include Elsa in Lohengrin. Besides Budapest, she will also perform Sieglinde in Zurich and is also scheduled to play the Marschallin from Rosenkavalier in Rome. Waltraud Meier is one of the great Wagner singers of our time. Her international career was launched at Bayreuth in 1983: she partnered Plácido Domingo as Sieglinde in the Millennium Ring production of Walküre with conductor Giuseppe Sinopoli and director Jürgen Flimm. Linda Watson is also one of the most distinguished living Wagner sopranos. She made her debut at Bayreuth as Kundry, in 2000 played Ortrude in Lohengrin and from 2006, she sang Brünnhilde for three years. She also played this role at the 2007 “Wagner in Budapest” Opera Festival and in 2009 will also interpret it in Götterdämmerung.
