In 2006, a semi-staged performance of Parsifal enjoyed immense success and in 2007, we will present complete performances of the first two operas from Wagner’s legendary tetralogy, The Ring of the Nibelung. Again, Ádám Fischer will conduct the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and he will be joined by stars of world opera, including Judit Németh, Christian Franz and Thomas Konieczny, who enchanted audiences last year in the now legendary Parsifal performances. The director and designer of these performances is Hartmut Schörghofer who studied stage design at the Mozarteum in his native Salzburg. Since 1989, he has worked widely at leading European opera houses and festivals, and worked, among others, at the Vienna Volksoper and the Klangbogen Festival, the Eisenstadt Haydn Festival as well as in Graz, Salzburg, Lisbon, Antwerp, Gent, Hannover, the Dresden Semperoper, the Ruhr Triennale, and Lyon, Metz, Strasbourg, Monte-Carlo and Stockholm. The performers in the second opera of Wagner’s Ring Cycle are also world stars. Linda Watson is an American soprano who made her debut at Bayreuth in 1998 as Kundry in a production of Parsifal with conductor Giuseppe Sinopoli. She has subsequently played this role in Berlin and Madrid; she was Brünnhilde in Bayreuth and the Vienna State Opera but her repertoire includes besides Wagner, roles by Beethoven, Richard Strauss and Beat Furrer. She has also appeared at the Salzburg Festival and the Bonn, Munich, Hamburg, Florence, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Washington, Seattle and Tokyo opera houses. Michaela Schuster completed her studies in the Salzburg Mozarteum and the Berlin Music College. In 1999, she joined the Darmstadt Theatre for three years where she appeared in Wagner roles. Guest performances during this period included singing Sieglinde at the Dresden Semperoper. She achieved an international reputation with her interpretations of Wagner: she was Ortrud in the Norwegian Opera House and Sieglinde at the Madrid Teatro Real and the Vienna State Opera. In 2007, the great Hungarian bass László Polgár, who turns sixty, makes his debut in the “Wagner in Budapest” Opera Festival. During his hugely successful career, he has worked with leading conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez, Riccardo Chailly, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, James Levine, Riccardo Muti, Simon Rattle and Sir Georg Solti. He first came to the attention of audiences at the Budapest Opera House as a supreme Wagnerian in the early eighties, when he played Amfortas in a production conducted by János Ferencsik.
