In 2006, a semi-staged performance of Parsifal enjoyed immense success and in 2007, we will present complete performances of the first two operas from Wagner’s legendary tetralogy, The Ring of the Nibelung. Again, Ádám Fischer will conduct the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and he will be joined by stars of world opera, including Judit Németh, Christian Franz and Thomas Konieczny, who enchanted audiences last year in the now legendary Parsifal performances. The director and designer of these performances is Hartmut Schörghofer who studied stage design at the Mozarteum in his native Salzburg. Since 1989, he has worked widely at leading European opera houses and festivals, and worked, among others, at the Vienna Volksoper and the Klangbogen Festival, the Eisenstadt Haydn Festival as well as in Graz, Salzburg, Lisbon, Antwerp, Gent, Hannover, the Dresden Semperoper, the Ruhr Triennale, and Lyon, Metz, Strasbourg, Monte-Carlo and Stockholm. Hanna Schwarz makes her debut at the “Wagner in Budapest” Opera Festival. She is particularly associated with Wagner. Since 1975 she has sung at Bayreuth and her roles in the Ring – in San Francisco, Metropolitan Opera and Covent Garden – have earned her an international reputation. She first appeared in Parsifal at the Salzburg Festival in a production conducted by Herbert von Karajan. She is also much in demand as a concert singer and has sung with leading orchestras and conductors. Her broad repertoire even includes much contemporary music. Another artist making his “Wagner in Budapest” Opera Festival debut in 2007 is Olaf Bär who completed his musical studies in his native Dresden. After successes at leading competitions, he began his international career as a concert and lieder singer, and has since performed regularly in the concert halls of Europe, Australia, Israel, Japan and America. As an opera singer, he is equally in demand at the leading music theatres of Europe and America, and his repertoire in both areas stretches from the Baroque to contemporary music. Ádám Fischer is a versatile musician who seems equally at home in the music of Haydn, Wagner or even Mahler: he founded the Haydn Festival and Orchestra in Eisenstadt and organised a Mahler Festival in Kassel. He is regularly invited to conduct at Bayreuth, making his debut in 2001 and his performances led to the distinguished journal Opernwelt awarding him the title “Conductor of the Year”. The Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra was founded following an initiation by Ernő Dohnányi in 1943. The ensemble rarely performed opera, but at the 2006 “Wagner in Budapest” Opera Festival, the ensemble and its musical director Ádám Fischer proved that the musicians are more than capable of producing supreme performances in this genre.
