The year 2006 saw the launch, under the helm of musical director Ádám Fischer, of the Wagner in Budapest programme series. Ever since, the festival has brought unique realisations of the composer’s work to the stage throughout the month of June. The productions staged in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall have given rise to a new style of performing opera by bringing to life Wagner’s monumental works through non-traditional theatrical means. The creators of the 2012 première of Tannhäuser, ...Fischer and director Matthias Oldag, aimed to convey the most important ideas of Wagner's operas through the use of the very latest techniques, thus allowing modern audiences to empathise fully with the performance. “We wanted to show the conflicts,” states Fischer in the film, referring to the way in which Tannhäuser is ground down by the two worlds he inhabits, and also the fate that befalls those who attempt to break out of society's established boundaries. Through the production, director Matthias Oldag depicts the position of art by showing what happens to a society where art is missing. He identifies Tannhäuser with the figure of the rebel artist who becomes an outcast of society.
