Conductor: Iván Fischer Featuring: Radu Lupu – piano Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, op. 58 Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 in E major World famous pianist Radu Lupu was born in Romania and gave his first concert at the age of twelve. After winning three major competitions – Van Cliburn, Enescu, Leeds – he appeared with Karajan at the Salzburg Festival, with Muti and the Vienna Philharmonic and Barenboim and the New York Philharmonic. In 1995 he won both a Grammy and an Edison Award f...or the best recording of the year. Beethoven composed his Piano Concerto in G major between 1805 and 1807 and it was premièred at a mammoth concert at the Theater an der Wien alongside the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies and extracts from the Mass in C major. Beethoven was the soloist but it was becoming increasingly apparent that his growing deafness was making public performances increasingly impossible. Anton Bruckner composed his Symphony No. 7 between 1881 and 1883 and with its various allusions in its melodies and orchestration, can be interpreted as a tribute to his adored idol, Wagner, who died in 1883. The symphony was premièred in 1884 by the Hungarian born Arthur Nikisch which brought the sixty year old Bruckner his late success he was looking for.
