Waltraud Meier to Receive the Lotte Lehmann Memorial Ring

2011. April 05.

The mezzo-soprano, most famous for the role of Kundry, will receive the award of the soloists of the Vienna State Opera on April 21. At the June 17 and 19 performances of Parsifal, the audience of the Palace of Arts will also have the chance to experience one of the world’s leading Wagner-heroines live.

At the April 21 performance of Parsifal in Vienna, the singer will be handed the memorial ring by Vienna State Opera intendant, Dominique Meyer and the head of the association of soloists, Herwig Pecoraro. The award was founded in order to recognise the outstanding achievements of singers in the roles of German opera, and the ring has previously been worn by Leonie Rysanek and Hildegard Behrens. Waltraud Meier’s worldwide career kicked off with the role of Kundry at the 1983 Bayreuth Festival, and four years later she debuted at the Staatsoper in the very same role. She is a frequent guest at the opera performances of Covent Garden, the New York Metropolitan, the Milano Scala and the Salzburg Festival. She, however, does not confine herself to Wagner, some of her more famous roles include Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana, Amneris in Aida and the title role of Carmen.
