The phenomenon that is Zorán has only grown in recent years. This is not only because of what this outstanding musician has become over the course of his extraordinary career, but perhaps increasingly due to what he has not become. His voice has not worn, indeed, it seems that he sings better and better with each passing year, as if his skills as a performer have really only reached full maturity over the past decade. In the meantime, he has not become a musical clown who “mucks around” in an ef...fort to conceal his age, neither has he grown into a grey-bearded old sage – as he has always known how to live according to his stage in life. He has not become inclined, like many gentlemen of a certain age, to put on something of a pot-belly – he has successfully maintained a dignified appearance. He has not become jaded like some of his otherwise talented contemporaries, but has had the strength to work consistently and retain to this day the values which, even if perhaps he has not sworn by them, he has nevertheless adhered to consistently. He has not become hackneyed by accepting gigs in discos and miming his hits in the hope of making bigger bucks, instead remaining constant in his belief in the power and importance of live music. He has not ridden the waves of fashion to make records of varying quality, instead sticking with his circle of outstanding writing and musical partners. He has not discovered a new technique for himself and has not bored his audience to tears pursuing some “-ism” or another to force old songs upon them time and again, preferring instead to make an entirely new record each time. Nor has he become mixed up in a self-important public political role, debasing himself in the role of a court musician to one regime or the next, and neither has he devolved into a representative of the intellectual kitsch. It is very difficult to express this next sentence – and almost impossible to say such a thing about a creative person – but, in this case, there is no way around it: quite simply, Zorán has been and remains an artist who creates and conveys work of quite possibly everlasting value, and – perhaps most importantly – he has always been a performer of utter authenticity.
