Taking its name from the gentleman to whom William Shakespeare’s sonnets were dedicated, the aptly named WH melds the Bard’s immortal 400-year-old verse with the music of the modern age. The dedication of the verse collection published in 1609 reads “To Mr. W. H.”, and though numerous theories have been put forward regarding the person behind the initials, his identity remains a mystery to this day. WH was founded in autumn 2006 by the cellist and composer Albert Márkos, bringing together reco...gnized figures – both composers and performers in their own right – from the most diverse genres of the Hungarian music scene, including Samu Gryllus on bass guitar and Hunor G. Szabó on drums and percussion. The pleasure of listening to the sonnets in their original language is provided by MC Sena, the leading diva on the domestic hip-hop scene. For those who cannot entirely follow Shakespeare’s English, facsimiles of the original verse with Hungarian translation are projected on screens at the concert. The group’s debut album Shakespeare’s Sonnets appeared in 2009, on the 400th anniversary of publication. Thirteen sonnets were chosen and set to music in the widest variety of styles. The performance mixes elements of contemporary improvisation, klangfarbe Musik, free and modern jazz, abstract hip-hop and spoken word, while a variety of references to the history of music can be recognized in its melodies.
