Wayne Shorter – tenor saxophone, Danilo Pérez – piano, John Patitucci – double bass, Brian Blade – drums Those who want to truly understand the meaning of major jazz should definitely not miss the playing of 75-year-old Wayne Shorter. He is one of the greatest living jazz saxophonists and has visited Hungary many times during his different artistic periods. His concerts have always been great successes. His quartet, which has been together since 2000, is one of the leading contemporary jazz ens...embles and they have made some epoch making albums, including the 2002 Footprints Live!, 2003 Alegría and the 2005 Beyond the Sound Barrier. In 2009, the footprints of the Wayne Shorter Quartet are finally leading into the Palace of Arts. Born in Newark, Shorter – who because of his virtuosic playing was known in the army, where he played in the military band as “The Newark Flash” – made his name alongside Horace Silver and Maynard Ferguson. His artistry began to be recognised in 1959 when he joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, where he became a soloist and artistic director and also shone as a composer. In 1964, he laid down a new milestone in jazz history when he joined Miles Davis’s legendary quintet and for a few years, played alongside Davis as he created jazz-rock/fusion. He travelled this path and took it a great deal further when he achieved unbelievable popularity with Weather Report, alongside the late keyboard player Joe Zawinul. After Weather Report broke up, he pursued a solo career, primarily exploring the possibilities of electronic sonorities. He then found perfect partners in the shape of Danilo Pérez, John Patitucci and Brian Blade who themselves are heading towards being institutions themselves.
