To this day, the origins of flamenco are disputed, but one thing scholars can agree on is that, together with the Gypsy people condemned to a life of wandering, it arrived in Spain in the 15th century. Genuine flamenco is more than mere music, but a whole way of thinking and lifestyle, based on total communication between performer and listener. Performers relive their pains and sufferings, while listeners express their ecstasy – the so-called duende – by jumping up and spontaneously crying out.... The concerts of Tomatito, one of the greatest figures in contemporary flamenco, are a guarantee of just such an experience. Born in 1958, he comes from a line of famous flamenco guitarists that includes his father, grandfather and great uncle, with whom he performed from the age of 12 at the Taberna Gitana flamenco club in Málaga. It was there that he was heard by Paco de Lucía – considered the great innovator in the genre – and the singer Camarón de la Isla. Tomatito was soon included in their group and became its lead guitarist on Paco’s departure. He accompanied Camarón for 18 years, from New York to Montreux, until the latter’s death in 1992. In the course of his solo career, Tomatito has worked with the most popular flamenco singers – such as Duquende and Potito – and stars of Latin jazz, while making two albums with the pianist Michel Camilo (Spain and Spain Again). He has also written numerous compositions for theatre and film, among them for Tony Gatlif’s Vengo, for which he won a César Award; in addition, he holds two Latin Grammy Awards for the albums Aguadulce and Sonanta Suite.
