The Hungarian jazz scene is preparing for an extraordinary celebration. The Benkó Dixieland Band is celebrating its 55th Anniversary. With 10,700 concerts, over 100 CDs and DVDs, countless awards and victories at festivals behind them, the band has long been at the forefront of the traditional jazz genre. A 24-part TV series on jazz history, the Benkó Christmas Mass, many hundreds of hours of television appearances and a fan club that numbers 40,000 are just some of the things that make this ba...nd unique in the world. We have grown accustomed to seeing prominent international stars perform with the Benkó Dixieland Band. Joining the roll call of over 75 jazz stars who have appeared with the band over the years, this evening will feature the legendary American cornet player Warren Vaché. Born in New Jersey to a family of musicians in 1951, Vaché performed as a soloist in Benny Goodman’s band at the 1978 Carnegie Hall gala concert commemorating the concert Goodman gave 40 years earlier – which was the first ever jazz concert in the history of Carnegie Hall. Vaché has already visited Budapest with both Goodman and tenor saxophonist Buddy Tate, another of Benkó’s former guest stars, and is now a celebrated jazzman in his own right. With the playing of Vaché backed by the unique style of the Benkó band, it promises to be a special concert offering outstanding musical delights. The concert will also feature Benkó’s two vocalists, Myrtill Micheller and Tamás Berki. All those joining the Benkó Dixieland Band’s 55th anniversary celebration at the Palace of Arts on Tuesday 17 April, 2012, starting at 7 pm, are assured of being participants in an exciting jazz experience.
