Sam Lee was born in London to an artistic family with Polish roots on his father’s side. Having demonstrated his universal talents in numerous fields from visual arts to burlesque dance, he dropped anchor in the folk songs of the British Isles. He collects, sings and teaches these songs, at universities, on radio and TV shows, and – last but not least – on stage at The Nest Collective, a London club he himself founded. The four years he spent in the travelling company of legendary Scottish sing...er Stanley Robertson were a decisive influence on Lee’s career. It was then that it became crystal clear to him that he needed to learn not from books but from the original performers, from itinerant Gypsy and Irish singers. In this way, he discovered the deep and timeless well from which his first album draws, which was released in 2012 under the title Ground of Its Own. Nominated for the Mercury Prize, the album has become one of the biggest international sensations in the genre in recent years, and the first English record to top European world music radio playlists. Simultaneously intimate and disconcerting, it reaches back to times long past while breaking new ground. Archaic English ballads are performed in magical arrangements, bringing a wide range of instruments “all under one roof,” from the cello, trumpet and violin to the koto, ukulele, kantele and tabla. What emerges is a visionary, dreamlike journey into a musical universe on which the listener is inexorably carried along spellbound. Presented by: Palace of Arts
