One of the best known... musical theatrical author of the Anglo-Saxon countries, the American Stephen Sondheim started his career as a lyricist; the 'West Side Story' has been a milestone and a point of reference in the world of musicals ever since. Afterwards came his own compositions circumscribing topics, which are unusual in the world of the genre. Let the piece be the adaptation of classic Grimm-tales embedded into black humour ('Into the Woods') or about the westernisation of Japan ('Pacific Overtures'), Sondheim has managed to compose music of unique sound for not necessarily stage-destined stories in a way that he has never or rarely had to sacrifice on the altar of popular taste. The programme of the concert was compiled from this life work by the musical director, László Zádori, who had earlier composed a 12-minute suite from the songs of 'Sweeney Todd'. The Sondheim-musical, considered by many as the most significant one, was performed in Hungary in the joint production of the Rock Theatre and the Opera House, and in a Kaposvár direction. The performance introduces melodies from the above piece and from other successful works of the composer, such as 'Follies', 'Assassins', 'A Little Night Music', 'Merrily We Roll Along', and, the piece lending the title to the evening, 'Passion'.
