Bucharest Tango is both nostalgia music and an exciting musical adventure, exploring the night music of Bucharest between the two wars. Nicknamed Little Paris, the East European tango was exceptionally popular but communism would not tolerate it. Oana Cătălina Chitu lives in Berlin but heard the old repertoire from her parents which prompted her to expand her own repertoire, which ranges from opera to jazz. The songs of the first half of the 20th century seem to be enjoying a renaissance on othe...r countries. In Hungary the Budapest Bar tells a similar story. In their mood, the melancholic tangos are not so different from contemporary Hungarian hits, but when the Balkan flute and harmonica start playing, or the purer folk tone of the violin and gypsy music, then the unique Bucharest sound is created.
