Electronics and world music take centre stage at this concert with a British-Indian musician and the Hungarian Mitsoura group. Nitin Sawhney is a true renaissance man who not only plays several instruments but composes and produces songs and orchestral works. He is also an active DJ. He is a familiar figure in the world of music, film, video games, dance and theatre. He has made eight studio albums and written music for 40 films, as well as tunes for countless TV adverts. He also appears on te...levision in cultural programmes and is almost a household name. He is an acknowledged flamenco guitarist and jazz pianist, and his works have been performed by leading British symphonic ensembles. He dedicated an album, Varekai to the Cirque de Soleil company who are famous for their sophisticated music. He has performed with Paul McCartney, Anouchka Shankhar, Sting and Sinead O’Connor. And he is still just 46 years old! His style cannot be categorised: it embraces everything from Indian music to western classical, jazz and electronics. His concerts are similarly eclectic but never routine. The Mitsoura band are not so distant from Indian music either, drawing on the culture of traditional Gypsy music but heading towards modern sonorities. The unique style of the ensemble is a fusion of the remarkable vocal and performing style of Mónika Miczura, and musicians drawn from the best in Hungarian jazz, electronics and world music, as well as the indispensable video animations which feature in their concerts. Mónika Miczura first made a name for herself internationally in the Ando Drom band as one of the finest singers of Roma songs. Mitsoura have not abandoned these roots, and with the help of modern sounds, are trying to popularise Roma songs among the younger generation.
