A ronin is a samurai without a lord or master, who roams the land alone searching for challenges and a way forward. Ronin is also the name of Zurich pianist and composer Nik Bärtsch’s “ritual groove” zen-funk band. Leaving the confines of strict rules and traditions, both ronin and Ronin seek freedom. Bärtsch founded his Ronin quartet in 2001 with the intention of blending diverse musical elements into an organic whole, which is unique without being individualistic, and modern without being supe...rficial. Far from merely operating through variations of existing musical forms, Ronin takes a deeply reasoned and intuitive approach in blending the most diverse stylistic elements of contemporary classical music, funk, ritual Japanese music and electronica, from rhythm to melody, and from groove to tonality. The essence is always the same: to achieve the maximum effect by minimal means – ecstasy through asceticism. The 42-year-old Bärtsch has himself endeavoured to approach the essence of things from several sides: he studied philosophy, linguistics and musicology at the University of Zurich, while also mastering the martial art of aikido. His colleagues are partners not merely on the musical level, but on the spiritual and intellectual plane as well. The experience of Ronin’s music becomes truly complete live in concert, where the audience can feel for themselves the extent to which variations in the structured soundscape are born of the moment, and how important the magic of improvisation is to the musicians. As a critic in the Something Else! webzine put it: Ronin should record all their albums live. Presented by: Palace of Arts
