Nathan & The Zydeco Cha Chas: Nathan Williams – accordion, vocals, Dennis Paul Williams – guitar, Nathan Williams Jr. – keyboard instruments, Mark Williams – rubboard, Robert LeBlanc – bass guitar, Herman “Rat” Brown – drums Karen Caroll – vocals, guitar; The Mississippi Grave Diggers: Zsófia Hudák – double bass, Zoltán Nemes – piano, vocals, Péter Somos – drums, Andor Oláh – accordion, wind instruments To identify the roots of Zydeco music, we have to go back to the end of the 17th century... when the French colonised Louisiana. This led to the birth of Cajun music, the “French music” of the Louisiana whites, and Zydeco, which belonged to the black people and which despite some French influence, was primarily nourished by Afro-American dance music. In Cajun, the violin takes central focus, but the primary instrument of Zydeco is the piano accordion and this led to it becoming widespread in Louisiana jazz and rhythm and blues in the 20th century. Zydeco is frequently played by entire families and an example now comes to Hungary to show us just what this music is. Nathan Williams grew up influenced by Clinton Chenier. He idolised him and attended his first accordion lessons inspired by the great man. Today he is regarded as one of the finest exponents of the genre and has released seven albums. His band is made up of family members and a couple of the finest rhythm players in Louisiana; they will show us that Zydeco has not only a distant past but a secure future. The Mississippi Grave Diggers require less of an introduction in Hungary. They are led by Andor Oláh who as the leader of Dr. Valter & Lawbreakers became one of the most popular European performers of traditional delta blues. In 2003, he met gospel and country singer Big Daddy and founded the Mississippi Grave Diggers. Since then his band have backed many great black singers and in 2008, they are touring with Karen Caroll and this is one of the dates of the tour.
