No one can deny that Natacha Atlas is an exceptionally attractive woman. She does not even try to conceal her femininity since belly dancing is a frequent feature of her performances. Additionally her voice just oozes passion. But the attraction of Natacha Atlas has also to do with her exceptionally versatile musicality in which she brings together the music of the Middle-East and Europe. Her background has prompted her to look for the cross-over between the musical worlds of these different cul...tures. Her father’s parents were Jewish Moroccan and Egyptian, while her mother’s side of the family was British. She grew up in Belgium and England but eventually found her roots, although before her breakthrough success she was a member of a salsa band. So it is no trouble for her to sing in four languages (French, English, Arabic, Spanish). Before her solo career took off, she was the singer of the British Transglobal Underground group, and there she experimented by fusing African, Eastern and Western music. Atlas’s songs have much to say about bringing Muslim and Jewish culture closer together since she claims both cultures in her ancestry. She has delved into Arab music most deeply, particularly its more popular trends which she has paired with the most diverse styles. One of her most popular songs is the composition I Put A Spell on You by legendary bluesman Screaming Jay Hawkins, or the French hit Mon Amie En Rose in an Arabic arrangement. Her songs are popular in both the west and Arab countries. In Egypt, they can even be heard in several soap operas.
