Stéphan Oliva & François Raulin Quintet – “Echoes of Spring” Gábor Winand – vocals, Ramón Valle – piano, Eric Vloeimans – trumpet Stéphan Oliva – piano, compositions, François Raulin – piano, compositions, Laurent Dehors – clarinet, Christophe Monniot – saxophone, Sébastien Boisseau – double bass Rita Marcotulli, born in Rome, has occupied the highest peaks of jazz played in Europe since the eighties. Listed among her most frequent collaborators are Andy Sheppard and Anders Jormin, but she ...also played with Chet Baker, Steve Grossman, Joe Henderson, Joe Lovano, Pat Metheny, Michel Portal, Enrico Rava, Aldo Romano and Kenny Wheeler on different occasions. Her latest release, recorded with Bebo Ferra, the best-known Italian guitar player, entitled Luar, addresses the moonlight in Brazil. Their duo is an enchanting mix of Latin-American and European sounds. The quite obvious kinship of souls between her and the Hungarian pianist with the highest profile, Béla Szakcsi Lakatos will result in their first time meeting – on stage. The name of the quartet, an acronym of the musicians’ initials, signals their equal status in the band. However it was Christophe Marguet who got the group together back in 2004. He and his two French stablemates are considered the outstanding soloists of the middle generation of jazzmen in their homeland. They consider the world famous German pianist, Joachim Kühn as their master whose one-time French accompanists were their teachers and idols. Marguet plays drums in Henri Texier’s present band, while Daniel Humair’s Baby Boom, one of the most feted French outfits, features both Christophe Monniot and Sébastien Boisseau. Leipzig born Joachim Kühn relocated to Paris in 1968, where he became one of the decisive voices of the avantgarde with Eje Thelin, Jacques Thollot and Michel Portal as his fellow musicians. He perfected his apparently inimitable style in the trio with Jean-François Jenny-Clark (bass) and Daniel Humair (drums). BMC Records is responsible for their first album. Thus the collaboration between three French musicians, a German pianist and a Hungarian record company is a fine example of pan-European and inter-generational understanding.
