The whole history of Afro-Americans will be brought to life at this concert by Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir. Slave work songs, spirituals, gospel, blues, jazz and funky, or rhythm and blues are all part of their repertoire, and black singer Linda Tillery has been popularising them with her own group since the late sixties. Her career began in San Francisco and her alto voice soon attracted attention singing alongside some impressive names: in the seventies she sang with Santana..., and then Bobby McFerrin chose her for his Voicestra group. Besides singing she has even worked as a drummer on forty albums. In the nineties she delved very deeply into Afro-American musical history and became an authority on the subject of black music, not just studying it but doing much to nurture the traditions: she founded her six member strong Cultural Heritage Choir in just a few months and set about making her research discoveries accessible for the general public. The work songs of the 17th and 18th centuries were not just about the difficulties of work but helped the slaves maintain the rhythms of their backbreaking labour. Their structures also form the basis for later gospel and blues music. Tillery and her ensemble like to perform traditional songs in jazz, rock and original styles. The group is suitably open to other genres, including folk tales, dances and the music of South America and the Caribbean in their musical adventures.
