Laurie Anderson - violin, vocals; Skuli Sverrisson - bass guitar; Peter Scherer - keyboard; Okkyung Lee - cello Laurie Anderson is celebrating her sixtieth birthday with a brand new production – a new record, band and tour. She released her first album Big Science twenty five years ago, which became a milestone in experimental rock. Born near Chicago, Anderson moved to New York in her early twenties where she studied art history and later taught. In the mid seventies she made her debut as ...a performance artist, making use of her classical music background, turning to experiments in electronic music with her violin. This led to world fame and her multimedia show United States (and a five part concert album) which appeared as a polished studio version as Big Science. The unification of film, live and electronic music, fine and video art, dance and story telling, led to the projects Empty Places (1990) and Stories from the Nerve Bible (1993). Meanwhile, she released seven albums, some of which were big hits on the pop music market. At the time of preparing this guide, we do not know what programme Laurie Anderson will be bringing with her, but it is a safe bet that she will be delivering a rare and special performance. The cohesion of poetry, theatre and concert creates Anderson’s new work, Homeland, as well. The central theme is again the United States, but now the “obsessed” America of the 21st century which is pervaded by the new language of violence and war, and the intertwining of freedom and fear.
