László Hortobágyi – rudra-vina, sitar, surbahar, computed mémesis, Tibor Mótyán – tablá-tarang, tablá, jidaki, Zsolt Kosztyu – bass, samplers, effects, Tamás Nádházi – drum, gong, samplers, harmonium, Ferenc Haász, Anita Pintér – stage design and lights acoustics The Gāyan Uttejak Orchestra (GUO) has preserved the traditions of Hindu-Muslim and traditional Asian musical styles in Hungary for almost thirty years now. It was in 1981 that László Hortobágyi established the Gáyan Uttejak Society, an...d then the Orchestra, which played its first series of concerts between 1984 and 1988 and began giving public performances again a few years ago. More than fifty records and CDs, most attributed to Hortobágyi, have been published by Hungarian and foreign labels, and the group has achieved great successes both at home and abroad, receiving an award in Germany for its reinterpretation of Hungarian folk music, and reaping numerous prestigious accolades as far afield as New Zealand, Spain and France. GUO’s performances are not concerts in the classic sense of the word. The visual spectacle has an elementary role, as the lighting effects and background projection help to reveal the deeper strata of the music. In the band’s musical compositions non-existent, mythical worlds materialise and are alloyed with the musical traditions of high cultures that surpass the experiences of European society. Floating candles, which serve to symbolise the inexorable march of time, connect the stage and the auditorium. But the music of the ancients does not only invoke the past, as electronic synthesisers are used to give the compositions and performances a contemporary feel.
