He established his reputation in the early 192...0s in Berlin and was fairly successful with his “absolute music”. However, he was powerfully drawn to the theatre and soon established a relationship with the Dresden Opera House. At the age of twenty four, in 1924, he began to write three one act operas and while looking for a text for a planned song cycle, came across a volume by Brecht. A little later he met Bertolt Brecht himself. During their three years of collaboration they produced six works, among them the “Songspiel” musical Mahagonny and the The Threepenny Opera (with its “melody of the century”, the ballad Mack the Knife). Although many theatres in the United States were largely commercial in nature, he managed to find a progressive company and in 1936 premièred his work Johnny Johnson. This is where his relationship with the American genre of “musical play” began. Several of his works were filmed and many songs he wrote for theatre and film became popular.
