In 1973, when the Kronos Quartet was founded in San Francisco, a new chapter opened up in the history of string quartets. This ensemble was not content to simply make do with the classical repertoire, instead they concentrated exclusively on the 20th century and not just on the music of contemporary classical composers. Besides performing works by Bartók, Schoenberg, Webern, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Cage, Boulez, Kurtág, Ligeti and others, they have also programmed works of jazz, rock, world mu...sic and even music that can’t be defined at all in their programmes. They have now released nearly thirty albums and have a repertoire of 450 pieces, among them compositions by Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Jimi Hendrix, John Zorn, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, István Márta, as well as Argentineans Astor Piazzolla and Osvaldo Golijov, Gambian Foday Musa Suso, Sudanese Hamza El Din, Azerbaijani Franghiz Ali Zadeh and Pakistani Pandit Pran Nath. There is no leading concert venue in the world which the Kronos Quartet has not visited in the past thirty years and yet they have come to the Palace of Arts with a unique programme. It comprises of those pieces which were largely inspired by folk music.
