Part I: Márta Sebestyén – vocals, Róbert Doór – double bass, László Mester – viola, Balázs Vizeli – violin, Kálmán Balogh – cimbalom Part II: Kálmán Balogh Gipsy Cimbalom Band (Kálmán Balogh – cimbalom, Péter Bede – saxophone, Csaba Novák – double bass, Mihály György – guitar, Ferenc Kovács – trumpet, violin, Frankie Lato – violin), Márta Sebestyén – vocals, Alan Bern (USA) – harmonica, vocals, Marin Bunea (Moldova) – violin, Adam Stinga (Moldova) – trumpet, Peter Ralchev (Bulgaria) – harmonica... Kálmán Balogh is a hugely popular cimbalom artist, not just in Hungary but internationally and is now celebrating his fiftieth birthday. He was eleven when his uncle Elemér Balogh encouraged him to take up the instrument. Two years later, he was playing in the Miskolc Avas Dance Ensemble, and in 1980, he graduated as a teacher from the Music Academy. He has played classical music with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, made a jazz record with David Murray but is perhaps best known as a performer of East-European and Balkan (Hungarian, Gypsy and Jewish) folk music. His band, the Kálmán Balogh Gipsy Cimbalom Band have been playing together for fifteen years and are just as open to playing East-European and Balkan vocal and instrumental Gypsy music as jazz and the more popular “tourist” Gypsy music tradition. Their CDs – Roma Wanderer, Aroma, Gipsy Colours, Aven Shavale – transcend easily any limitations of place and musical styles. The audience of the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall will be treated to the essence of this exceptionally rich range of folk music. In the first half of their programme they will perform celebrated Hungarian folk music in partnership with some great guests, while in the second half, we will hear a mix of Greek, Bulgarian, Romanian and Jewish folk music from the cimbalom band and invited international stars. We can rightfully expect to be treated to a literally unlimited experience.
