Hungarian jazz musicians are unquestionably in the vanguard of world jazz: they are universally admired for their technical training, stylistic diversity and knowledge of form. And yet relatively few are world famous. To achieve fame, you usually have to move to America. The objective of Jazz Showcase is to showcase Hungarian talent before European and American jazz experts in the hope they’ll develop a feel for the depth of Hungarian jazz, lead on – touch wood! – further studies, recording con...tracts, concert tours and other positive developments. On all three days of this festival, the jazz commences at four o’clock with the first youth band concert, followed at five and six with two new groups; each evening distinguished performers representing a particular jazz trend in Hungary will take to the stage: January 4, 20.00: Mihály Dresch Quartet Mihály Dresch – soprano and tenor saxophone, pipes, Miklós Lukács – cimbalom, Mátyás Szandai – double bass, István Baló – drums January 5, 20.00: Babos Project Special Gyula Babos – guitar, Mónika Veress – vocals, Róbert Szakcsi Lakatos – piano, synthesiser, Viktor Hárs – double bass, László Balogh – drums January 6, 20.00: Béla Szakcsi Lakatos – Hungarian Gypsy Jazz Béla Szakcsi Lakatos – piano, György Orbán – double bass, András Lakatos Pecek – drums, Mónika Rostás, Csaba Rostás – vocals The Mihály Dresch Quartet primarily integrates Hungarian folk music elements with jazz in a strikingly organic fashion. One of the legendary figures of fusion jazz was Gyula Babos who also draws on Roma traditions with his young colleagues. Béla Szakcsi Lakatos’s formation plays what is defined as Gypsy Jazz and their ambitions are similar to Babos and co, with the distinction that Szakcsi and friends are primarily acoustic jazz musicians. Afternoon concerts between 4 PM and 8 PM ever day can be attended with a single ticket at the price of 500.- HUF (student ticket: 200.- HUF), while tickets for the evening concerts cost 700.-; 1400.-; and 2200.- HUF. Judging by their technical qualifications, familiarity with styles and knowledge of forms, the Hungarian jazz musicians belong undoubtedly to the top ranks of the world, however only a few are granted world fame. To achieve this, one must sometimes move to America. The aim of Jazz Showcase is to introduce Hungarian talents to European and American jazz authorities, who might thus get to know what excellent musicians represent the new generations of Hungarian jazz, and who, according to our hopes, might help our youth towards further education, recording possibilities or concert tours. On all three days, the concert of the first young band starts at 4 PM, followed by further 3-3 performers at 5, 6 and 7 PM. In the evenings, noted artists who each follow a different, strong line of Hungarian jazz will appear on stage: 4 January, at 20:00: Dresch Mihály Quartet Mihály Dresch – soprano and tenor saxophone, recorders, Miklós Lukács - cimbalom, Mátyás Szandai – double bass, István Baló - drums 5 January, at 20:00: Babos Project Special Gyula Babos - guitar, Mónika Veress - vocals, Róbert Szakcsi Lakatos - piano, keyboards, Viktor Hárs – double bass, László Balogh - drums 6 January, at 20:00: Szakcsi Trio featuring Gábor Bolla Béla Szakcsi Lakatos - piano, Gábor Bolla - soprano and tenor saxophone, János Egri – double bass, Emil Jellinek - drums The Dresch Mihály Quartet mixes primarily elements of Hungarian folk music with jazz. One of the legendary personalities of fusion jazz, Gyula Babos sounds Gypsy traditions too, together with his young and even younger companions. The formation of Béla Szakcsi Lakatos plays music, which the pianist defines as Gypsy Jazz; this will be enriched with the innovative and sweeping modern mainstream performance of the 18-year-old saxophonist Gábor Bolla at this concert.
