Artistic director: Béla Szalóky Jazz Steps Brass (Zoltán Finok – clarinet, saxophone, István Lázár – trumpet, vocals, Attila Almási – trombone, Roland Szentpáli – tuba, László Herboly – drums) Police Big Band (conductor: Béla Szalóky) In keeping with the tradition established in 2005, the Palace of Arts is again offering a free programme of jazz in all its rich myriad forms to celebrate the Hungarian national day. At various points around the foyer, on the stage erected alongside the Ludwig M...useum and on the big stage placed before the Palace, audiences will this year be treated to ragtime, Dixieland and traditional big band music. This extends from 1920s and 1930s dance music, to swing evergreen numbers all the way to modern mainstream jazz. The dominant instrument in the performing formations this year will be from the brass family. An interesting aspect of Jazz Steps Brass, the group of bandleader Zoltán Finok is that even the bass solo is heard on brass, in this case, on the tuba. The artistic director of the programme, trombonist and composer Béla Szalóky is again encouraging adventurous amateur musicians to bring their own instruments along and enter the spirit of things. From eight o’clock, the Police Big Band concert will wind up official proceedings but is also just an overture to the fireworks scheduled to start at nine o’clock.
