All generations of Hungarian jazz musicians will assemble in the Festival Theatre, at various parts of the foyer, on the small stage on the Ludwig Museum side and the grand stage erected in front of the Palace, and perform in every imaginable jazz styles. You’ll see students from the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, members of the likes of the “great generation” such as Imre Kőszegi playing evergreen standards from the thirties and forties, cool jazz, bebop and modern mainstream. The core of the performing formations will be two traditional jazz trios, the Kőszegi and Gyárfás Trios – and they will be joined by soloists who will circulate around the various stages during the evening, performing with different groups. The clarinetist and saxophonist Zoltán Finok’s group, Jazz Steps will bring to life the classic hits of American and European swing. The festive jazz music is brought to a close by the Police Big Band who start performing at eight. They’ll be playing works by Duke Ellington and Sammy Nestico as well as compositions by band members. The artistic director of the programme, trombonist and composer Béla Szalóky is also encouraging amateur musicians to bring their instruments along and join in this festival of joyous music making.
