Concertos always give solo musicians a good chance to demonstrate their talent and virtuosity. This has been the case for most instrumentalists since the 16th century. For cimbalom artists though, this avenue has only been opened relatively recently, largely thanks to the work of contemporary musicians. This two-part concert not only showcases the sparkling talent of one of Hungary’s finest young cimbalom players Miklós Lukács, but also presents world premières by two Hungarian jazz composers. T...hey are pianists György Vukán and Kálmán Oláh, who have written concerto works specially for Lukács. He says these works “have the openness and maximalism needed to create profound concert experiences.” In the second half of the concert, we shall hear the Miklós Lukács Quintet formed four years ago, playing with another master of Hungarian jazz, Béla Szakcsi Lakatos. The quintet draws inspiration primarily from folk music, jazz and contemporary classical sources. Such experimental musical broadmindedness has long characterised the 33 year old Lukács. As a member of the Mihály Dresch Quartet, along with Irén Lovász and Csaba Tűzkő, he stretched the boundaries of folk music and jazz, not just as a performer but also composer. Miklós Lukács has already enjoyed much success, playing Hungarian rhapsodies with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, been a soloist with the Concertante di Chicago in the United States and at the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, and been the subject of a film, directed by Mano Camon called Cimbalom Legacy.
