Norwegian Jan Garbarek is an established favourite of Hungarian audiences. In recent years, he has visited Hungary with one of his most successful projects, Officium, in which he plays medieval melodies with the Hilliard Ensemble. This journey through time with Officium continues across the world but Garbarek also tours with his own group. It boasts an impressive line-up: on keyboards Rainer Brüninghaus, with whom he has played for over twenty years, Brazilian bass player Yuri Daniel and the mas...ter of percussion, Indian Trilok Gurtu. Tickets: 2600, 4900, 7500, 8900 Ft Jan Garbarek is much more than just a jazz musician. Although he was weaned on John Coltrane – hearing the great saxophonist made him want to take up the instrument – he soon discovered for himself the music of Eastern cultures (as did Coltrane) and began stretching musical boundaries in new directions. He soon developed his own unique sonority and style which even those with little passing knowledge of jazz immediately recognise. Everyone finds something for themselves in Garbarek’s sound: Greek, Indian and Slav musicians and composers have written pieces for his saxophone, hearing some characteristic of their own culture in his playing. As he says himself, it was no easy matter finding his own sonority: “I began with Coltrane’s “Countdown”: here were so many notes. I could copy it but later I had to “water” my own music. I followed this process to thoroughly understand the elements and construction of the music; it left me with something of my own to work on.” The new was born and continues to be born afresh.
