Every music-lover in Hungary already knows that UNESCO added the International Jazz Day to its list of significant dates in 2012. Thanks to a broad support from the music profession, since 2014, the most important centres of jazz in Hungary have celebrated with a veritable cavalcade of concerts that can be attended free of charge. The Palace of Arts now joins the programme of events in Hungary for the second time, offering the stage to three jazz ensembles comprised of superlatively promis...ing young musicians who have nevertheless proven themselves several times over.
The Klára Hajdu Quartet is guaranteed to bring an upbeat atmosphere to the celebration. Originally founded in 2008, the quartet has since 2012 operated with its current line-up: Balázs Neumann on piano, Márton Soós on upright bass and Marcell Hoff on drums. In addition to jazz standards, their repertoire also includes their own compositions, as well as arrangements of pop and folk tunes. Pianist Norbert Káel's Jazzical Trio shows how jazz and classical music can be fused together. The compositions of this trio, which is rounded out by György Orbán and András Pecek Lakatos, attest to the individual imagination of its namesake pianist, who has also spent time in the United States, by transforming widely-known classical pieces with a jazz sensibility.
To close out the day, Syrius Legacy harks back to the musical numbers of a once-legendary jazz-rock group with arrangements in line with present-day. The quintet, recruited in celebration of Syrius front man Mihály Ráduly's 70th birthday, features Izsák Vidákovich on tenor saxophone and flute, Tamás Ludányi on alto and soprano saxophone, Dániel Szebényi on keyboards, Tibor Fonay on bass guitar, and Ákos Benkó on drums. Szebényi and Benkó provide vocals in addition to their instrumental work.
