He enjoyed his first successes with ...the legendary Bijelo Dugme ethno-rock band, which released a dozen albums until it disbanded with the approach of the Yugoslav war. Bregović was then encouraged by Emil Kusturica to try his hand at film music and their first joint work was Time of the Gypsies, which became a huge international hit. This led to further commissions and his compositions were sung by world stars, such as Iggy Pop, Ofra Haza and Cesaria Evora. He achieved something that few composers could dream of: his songs Ederlezi and Mesecina are now known across the world as Balkan evergreens. He last visited the Palace of Arts with his opera Karmen with a Happy End in which he queried why there is always a tragic end to the only opera about Gypsies, the famous Carmen by Bizet. On this occasion, we shall hear songs from his new double album, Alcohol that is released in January 2009. The first album is called Plum Brandy, the second Champagne and this completes the circle: we can sample in Alcohol the shaping influences of Bregović’s musical culture, through the Gypsy brass band with their enthralling rawness and the more refined devices of a concerto, written for string quartet, violin, brass band and male choir.
